Piña Weaving

The Filipino in Me - Insights into Living Heritage

Entry by Earl M. Masangkay. Winnipeg, Manitoba

Artist's Statement

These photos were shot at La Hermina Piña Weaving industry in Kalibo, Aklan, which is the main and one of the oldest manufacturers/weavers of piña cloth in the Philippines. Also, products here are being exported to various parts of the world most particularly North America, and Europe. Piña weaving is an age-old tradition that was recently revived in the past 20 years.

I was born in Kalibo, Aklan, and piña weaving has been part of our culture as an Aklanon. As an Aklanon and as a Filipino, our culture is very important like any other culture. We must advocate for what we have and continue it with the current and next generation.
