Dismantling Oneself

Philippine Arts Council

The Filipino in Me - Insights into Living Heritage

Entry by Scot Gelito. Edmonton, Alberta

Artist's Statement

This piece is about the deconstruction of significant objects found in the Filipino culture. My growth in life has always been heavily influenced by my Filipino parents, thus, certain aspects of my identity and psyche have been constrained in order to fit the ideals enforced in Filipino society. Although the direction of my life has always been restricted, this piece explores the idea of dismantling the strict expectations that have been forced upon me and my desire to create my own unique identity.

Interesting concept. I like all the faces looking on and I suppose they represent societal expectations. And the colourful pink ballerina figure dancing elegantly is the deconstruction.
